The Pentax 17 is a fixed-focal-length film camera designed for half-frame shooting. This captures two 17x24mm images in the original 35mm film format (24x36mm). When held in the normal camera position, images are captured in portrait orientation, which has the significant advantage that the images are delivered in smartphone-compatible format immediately after development and scanning, allowing them to be shared directly in communities. Another major advantage is the lower cost, as the film and development prices remain the same, while the image yield is doubled. 24-exposure film can accommodate 48 images, and 36-exposure film can accommodate up to 72 images. The camera features manual film advance, based on the mechanism used in PENTAX SLR film cameras. The film advance lever allows the user to advance the film and raise the shutter. A simple loading system has been developed to prevent errors when loading the film. Image control is carried out via a frame counter that counts up to 72 frames. Rewinding is also done manually via a rewind crank.
